I came to Chennai around 10th of December as my mother was just discharged from hospital. When I left Chicago, I was hoping to go to Kanchipuram for Aradhana. However, few days later my mother was re-admitted and my plan of going to Kanchipuram was off the table as I was busy running between home and hospital. Before we left for hospital I prayed to Mahaperiyava and sent a message and my namaskaram to Sri Periyava in Venus colony camp. So I decided to find some place nearby in W.Mambalam and thought I could go to Vignesh Studio in the morning for abishekam etc. I did not know that they moved to Murthy Street. Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – On account of this very auspicious Sri Sankara Jayanthi Shri. B. Narayanan Mama was gracious enough to share a great sketch of Sri Kaladi Sankara and a beautiful Guru Padhuka Sthothram along with the meaning.

The  sketch  depicts  Kalady  as  it  looked  in  the  50’s.  The  original  sketch  was  made  by  the  Great  Divine  artist  Sri  Silpi  on  site. Mama recreated  it  and  added  the  painting  of  Sri  Bhagawath Paadhaal  and  Sri  Maha PeriavA.

In Gurukrupavilasam (Vol.1) authored by Sri Bhashya Swamigal the following wonderful anecdote is available.

Once when Sringeri Acharya HH Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati Mahaswamigal was in Antarmukha Avasta (inward meditation), He suddenly murmured a sloka and mentioned the name of one Sri ——-!

The Sloka reads thus:

jagadambA padasmartuH nahi duHkham kadAcana.
yadi jAyeta nUnam tat sukhodarkAya kevalam.

(For one who meditates on the Lotus Feet of Jagadamba nothing untoward will happen. Even if some obstacles come, rest assured that they are only for good).

Sri Bhashya Swamigal who was around there could not decipher exactly what needed to done, and listening to Acharya’s orders (mmm po po.. ezhuthu)…(go go write) noted down the sloka and sent it by telegram to Sri ————.

There was a discussion with Swamigal about how famous English poets like Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, Tennyson had expressed the principles of Vedanta in many places! I showed Swamigal an example of how Keats, though considered to be a Romantic poet, had spoken about Adwaita.

Swamigal replied: “Keats and Shelley should not be dubbed solely as ‘Sensual Poets’ (phrase used by Him). You gave an example of Keats. Has Shelley also spoken about Adwaita?”

I started to think but could not recollect.

Swamigal gave me a clue, “How about Shelley’s work in the poem Elegy?”

I still could not recall!

Swamigal Himelf continued, enjoying the beauty of Shelley’s words:

காஞ்சிப்பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க திருவண்ணாமலையில் இருந்து ஒரு புரோகிதர் மாதம் தவறாமல் வந்து விடுவார். ஒருமுறை அவர் பெரியவரைத் தரிசிக்க வரிசையில் காத்து நின்றார். அப்போது பெரியவர் தன் சீடரை அழைத்து, “அந்த திருவண்ணாமலை புரோகிதரை வெளியே போகச் சொல்,” என்றார்.

சீடருக்கு காரணம் புரியவில்லை. அவர் தகவலை புரோகிதரிடம் சொல்ல அதிர்ந்து போன அவர், தயங்கியபடியே வெளியேறி, ஆனால் மடத்து வாசலில் நின்று கொண்டே இருந்தார். விஷயம் பெரியவர் கவனத்துக்கு வரவே சீடரை அழைத்து, “அவன் ஊரிலிருந்து கிளம்பும்போது, ஒரு வீட்டில் இருந்து வந்தவர்கள் தங்கள் வீட்டில் ஒரு இறப்பு நிகழ்ந்து விட்டதாகக் கூறினர். காரியங்கள் செய்வதற்கு அழைத்தனர். அவனோ அதைச் செய்யாமல் மறுத்து விட்டு மடத்துக்கு போவதாக சொல்லி வந்து விட்டான். அவனை உடனே ஊருக்குப் போய் அந்தக் காரியங்களை உரிய நாட்களுக்குள் முடித்துக் கொடுத்து, ‘சுபநிகழ்வு’ முடிந்த பின் தரிசனத்துக்கு வர வேண்டும் என சொல்லி விடு,” என்றார்.

இதை சீடர் அவரிடம் போய் சொல்லவே, ஊரில் நடந்த விஷயம் இந்த மகானுக்கு எப்படி தெரிந்தது என்று ஆச்சரியப்பட்டார் புரோகிதர்.

பெரியவரின் உத்தரவுப்படி ஊருக்குப் போய், நடந்ததை அவர்களிடம் சொல்லி, அந்த குடும்பத்திற்கு தேவையானதை செய்து முடித்த பிறகு ஒருநாள் மடத்துக்கு வந்தார்.

அவரை அழைத்த பெரியவர், “சுபகாரியங்களைக் கூட நீ மறுக்கலாம்…
